Gestational Diabetes

High blood sugar that is 1st diagnosed during pregnancy

Signs & Symptoms

  • Thirst
  • Urinary Frequency Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Blurred vision

Risk Factors

  • Overweight AMA
  • History of GDM
  • Multiples
  • Poor diet

Testing

Initial Glucose Challenge

Done between weeks 24-28

1 hour test

Results > 140mg/dL need follow up testing

Follow up Testing

Patient has to fast overnight 

Testing done at 1 hour, 2 hours & 3 hours

If 2 out of 3 are high = GDM

The Nurse’s Role

● Monitor Blood Sugar
● Monitor baby (NSTs & BPP)
● Teaching: Diet and exercise, stress management, infection control, insulin injection, weigh self at home

Complications for Mom

Preterm birth

Preeclampsia

Type 2 DM

Complications for Baby

Macrosomia

Hypoglycemia after delivery

RDS (↑ insulin =↓ surfactant) 

Polycythemia

Shoulder dystocia
