Newborn Reflexes

Moro

The Startle Reflex Extremities extend, fingers form a C then return to flexion

Occurs until 6 months

Palmar Grasp

Grasp object that touch their palm

Occurs until 2 months

Plantar Grasp

Toes curl down over object when the sole is touched

Occurs until 1 year

Babinski’s

Stroke baby’s sole and their toes will flair out

Occurs until 1-2 years

Tonic Neck (Fencer’s Position)

Turn baby’s head to one side and their extremities on that same side should extend

Occurs until 4 months

Sucking

Put a gloved finger in baby’s mouth and they should start sucking on your finger

Occurs until 8 months

Rooting

Stroke baby’s cheek and baby’s head will turn to the stimulated side

Occurs until 6 months

Stepping

Hold the baby upright and one foot touches a flat surface, the baby will step with the other leg

Occurs until 4 weeks

*Moro reflex can be uneven due to a brachial plexus injury; this occurs in shoulder dystocia deliveries when the baby is macrocosmic

*Macrosomia = baby that weighs over 8 pounds 13 ounces (4,000 grams)

The Three Reflexes that we have life long

2. Pupillary

3. Blink
