Narcissistic Personality Disorder

A narcissist is a common catchphrase describing someone who is arrogant but it is actually a serious condition.

Cluster B personality disorder (dramatic, emotional, erratic traits)

Risk factors: male, early adulthood

Causes

  • Childhood trauma
  • Genetics
  • Cultural environment
Only official diagnosis is NPD but these are subtypes
Overt (Agentic)—focused on self, power due to their sense of entitlement. Care about how they are seen.
Covert (Closet)—inflated sense of self-importance, see themselves as a victim. Use blame and shame. 
Antagonistic —competitive, arrogance, has to be #1 at all costs 
Communal-martyr, selfless 
Malignant-has traits associated with antisocial personality disorder, (aggression, paranoia)

Diagnosis 

  • DSM-5
  • Chronic
  • Long term impairments in functioning 
  • They must also display pathological personality traits that affect their relationships and well-being. 
  • Can’t be attributed to other things (example: substance abuse, developmental stage) 

Treatment 

  • Medications: Antidepressants, Mood stabilizers, Antipsychotic drugs
  • Therapy

Mnemonic for Symptoms 

Arrogant 

Fantasizes about power, brilliance, beauty

Admiration require in excessive amounts

Manipulative

Envious / Empathy is lacking 

Grandiose 

Associates with “special” people / institutions

Me 1st attitude

Entitlement / Exploitation of others
