Panic Attacks

Panic disorder is a type of anxiety disorder. 

Panic attacks typically last 15 to 30 minutes

Sudden, intense fear that triggers severe physical reaction.

Symptoms

Panic attacks typically begin suddenly, without warning. 

  • Sense of impending doom or danger
  • Fear of loss of control or death
  • Rapid, pounding heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Shortness of breath or tightness in your throat

Causes

  • Genetics
  • Major stress
  • Drugs/medications
  • Other disorders (OCD)

Risk factors

  • Early adulthood 
  • Women
  • Major life stress
  • A traumatic event
  • Smoking 
  • Too much caffeine intake
  • History of abuse

Complications

  • Development of specific phobias
  • Problems at work or school
  • Depression, anxiety disorders
  • Alcohol or other substance abuse 

Nursing Interventions 

  • Stay calm and be nonthreatening
  • Assure patient safety
  • Decrease stimulation
  • Administer medications (SSRIs, SNRIs, Benzodiazepines) 
  • Consult for psychotherapy
